Epitalon is four amino acids — Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly — and one of the more unusual research compounds in the peptide literature. It was developed from epithalamin, a peptide fraction that Morozov and Khavinson isolated from bovine pineal gland in the 1970s. The Russian geroscience research around it is extensive; the mechanistic question of how exactly it works is still open.
Proposed Mechanism
The working model is not classical receptor binding. Khavinson and colleagues have reported effects on telomerase expression in aging-related cell models and on circadian rhythm markers in aged rodents.
